Difficulty: Intermediate

We recommend The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by 13th Hour Escape - we had fun playing this room. We give this room a Fun Factor of 8 due to a standout cinematic moment that 13th Hour Escape Room deftly pulled off, as well as its immersive set which leaned into the Wizard of Oz theme very effectively!

13th Hour Escape Rooms is known for its horror-themed rooms, but we can assure you that this is the opposite of a horror-themed room. It is appropriate for all ages and is probably a good room for newer escape room players, as the difficulty is generally in the intermediate range, with a few basic puzzles as well.

There are only about 10 to 20, “I will never forget” moments in the over 600 rooms I have played. And The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has one of these memorable moments!

There are only about 10 to 20, “I will never forget” moments in the over 600 rooms I have played. And The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has one of these memorable moments. As the saying goes, its worth the price of admission! And we do recommend this room by all means - but I feel it didn’t quite live up to all the potential signaled by its cinematic moment. A couple of dings for this room were a repeated puzzle-solving technique and another puzzle, which, as currently clued, seems to have multiple valid solutions. We believe that puzzles are more fun when a puzzle-solving technique once used, is not used again. We also find puzzles more fun when there is a single elegant solution - we spun our wheels a bit chasing what seemed to be a valid solution only to find another valid way to solve the puzzle.

13th Hour Escape lobby directions to help us get in the mood for our visit to Oz!

The highlight of this room's fun is its set, which generously incorporates iconic moments from The Wizard of Oz! Your group can be as large as 8, although we recommend a group size of 4, starts off in Kansas in front of the house pictured below. Eventually - as the name implies you will meet up with the wonderful Wizard of OZ and meet several of the characters you would expect to find in this story. The puzzling is generally standard escape room puzzling, but you can ask for help if your group is stuck.

We played four rooms at 13th Hour Escape in Wharton New Jersey, and found all of their personnel friendly and welcoming - and that always positively impacts our fun
