Difficulty: Basic
Especially recommended for newer escape room players
We recommend Pirates: Wanted by Quest Room - we had a lot of fun. This game should be especially good for newer escape room players as we found the difficulty level to be basic and approachable by all levels.
We have played many Quest Rooms and have found them to be generally advanced level of difficulty and intense, but enjoyable experiences. So this new room Pirates: Wanted! was a bit of departure - but a fun departure. Also a big shout out to Quest Room as we understand that we played this room within its first week of operations - and despite a fairly high level of technology…everything worked. Very impressive for a new room.
Like many Quest Room games this room had a live actor element. Our actor, Renee, did a terrific job with her interactions. I know that many do not like playing escape rooms with an actor - but in this case Quest Room makes a gentle use of the actor dimension…and the role of the ship’s captain is closer to a game master than an actor…there are no intense moments of role play or confrontation; so we can recommend the actor moments as being very gentle.
Sometimes we have complained if a puzzle - especially one with electronic or technical interactions - does not give clear feedback that we did something correctly. That is definitely NOT the case here - Quest Room built in clear feedback that let us know when we got something right. Our only issue was when some recorded content was played we simply couldn’t under stand words - but our actor Captain stepped in and repeated the phrase so that we could understand it…and another note of appreciation here is that we were warned this might happen.
The game flow is generally very linear which is why we recommend four or fewer players…but the space is large so even groups of five or more will have room to spread out…indeed some of the linear elements had multiple tasks which could be performed by many players. As mentioned we believe this is a basic difficulty room - and indeed it is only a 45 minute experience. What makes the room ideal for newer players…but maybe a negative for more experience players is that the puzzle solving techniques are clearly clued, sometimes explicitly. But there is a wide variety of puzzles, lots of tactile manipulation of set pieces and a fairly high number of puzzles for a 45-minute game. So those players wanting more immersive - less “instructiony” puzzles - might find, Quest Room’s Amnesia, another game at this location more to their liking.
There are several locations for Quest Room so make sure you are headed for the right one. This one is at 5235 West Adams Blvd, Los Angeles 90016. Street parking was readily finable for us - but as of our visit Quest Rooms has not been permitted to put up any signage so that was a bit tricky. To their credit they did send us an aerial photo in the email confirmation - but I recommend that they also note the absense of signage in their confirmations…would have helped us be sure we were in the right spot.
